The only problem with these biscuits is in their packaging: they are poured into a lightweight plastic bag in a cardboard box, and so should be transferred to a sealed container to keep them fresh. I’d gladly pay a couple bucks more to have them in a sealed tub from the start.

Please note the biscuits arrive in a cardboard box, but are loose in an open bag. The bag is flimsy and not air tight. Once they arrive I immediately put them in air tight containers to ensure freshness, I suggest you do too. Hopefully they will come up with a better method for shipping.

This past January one of my dogs, Joon, was going through a rough patch. Her littermate, partner, and constant companion of fifteen years, Ben, passed away late December ’09. His passing left Joon utterly, entirely, and hopelessly lost. This showed in every aspect of her life, but nowhere was it more evident than in her eating. She stopped eating her normal food, appeared to be tuning out to the world, refused to eat anything I put in front of her (in a startling and terror-inducing reproduction of what we went through with Ben just weeks earlier), and eventually began vomiting blood and passing watery, bloody stool. After several fasts and trying to coax her back to eating with prepared, low fat foods like boiled chicken, and failing, I reluctantly turned to one of Royal Canin’s digestive veterinary diets. I say reluctantly because while the diet may have been low in fat, the ingredients left much to be deserved. While feeding this to her, I hurriedly looked for replacements. I scoured the shelves of local pet stores that catered to healthier diets. I found nothing that fit my rather stringent requirements, and nearly gave up.

Then I found a lone can of ZiwiPeak’s Lamb and Venison Tripe Daily-Dog cuisine. I almost missed it, as it was the only ZiwiPeak product on the shelf. It was the tripe, I think, and perhaps the splash of orange that caught my eye. When I realized that this was a *complete and balanced diet* composed mainly of lamb and venison tripe (lamb and venison are highly digestible meats, and excellent choices for animals with digestive issues), I was ecstatic. I’ve been a fan of tripe for years – for my companion animals, that is – so this was very much akin to scouring used book stores and finding a First Edition signed copy of The Lord of the Rings in mint condition for $4. Seriously.

I checked the guaranteed analysis, and was even more impressed. Crude Fat was a minimum of 4.5%. Bingo! Low fat. I read the rest of the ingredients, waiting for some silly carbohydrate to make an appearance and ruin the moment. Nope. Nothing but meat and some top notch ingredients like flaxseed oil and New Zealand Green Mussel.

Delighted, I rushed home, thinking that I might be able to switch Joon off of the Royal Canin nonsense sooner than expected. But just to be sure, I checked out ZiwiPeak’s website and read up on their food and processes.

Blown. Away.

One of the problems with getting Joon to eat had been that the food needed to smell good to her. The scent of boiled chicken didn’t do much for her, whereas if I lightly seared it with Pam in a frying pan she would be more likely to eat it. The Royal Canin diet had more of a scent to it, so she ate that, though not with much gusto.

When I put a small amount of ZiwiPeak’s Tripe Cuisine in front of her, it was as if rockets had gone off in her head. She came to life instantly and after swallowing the food in one gulp, looked eagerly and happily to me for more. I wanted to grant her wish, as I hadn’t seen her happy in weeks, but was mindful of her digestion. Over the next couple of days I increased the amount I gave her, and within two weeks she was back to normal. Her stools improved almost instantly, and she had a little bounce in her step again. It made for one VERY happy dad.

Soon after we switched to a mix of canned and dry ZiwiPeak, rotating the dry between their Venison & Fish, Venison, and Lamb Cuisines, but sticking with the Tripe can. Today she’s doing extremely well physically, though she still seems a bit lost at times.

Me too. Like her, I miss Ben.
